Our team at Surrey is led by Materials Scientist, Dr. Izabela Jurewicz and Biological Scientist, Dr. Rebecca Lewis. We are principally developing low-cost printable colour changing polymeric photonic crystals which can be used as novel security markers or time temperature indicators for anti-counterfeiting, or food/vaccine protection respectively. These novel technologies will help to address issues where time and temperature are critical such as in supply chains for food and pharmaceuticals. We are also expanding our collaboration to develop innovative synthetic carbon based nano-scaffolds for tissue engineering, which can be utilised for in-vitro pharmacological testing. The team is also made up by an additional three PhD students working on AMD sponsored work. The team at Surrey has strong links with those at Sussex and hence the teams are working together on key projects.
